The Balzan–Marenghi Duo, formed by Dario Balzan (saxophones) and Mauro Marenghi (piano), was created with the aim of enhancing the chamber repertoire for saxophone and piano, exploring its many expressive possibilities through a path that combines stylistic rigor with an openness to contemporary musical languages.
The Duo’s program unfolds along a broad and coherent historical and stylistic arc. Its starting point is early twentieth-century French music, with works by Claude Debussy and André Caplet, in which the saxophone—an instrument that was still relatively new within the European classical tradition of the time—finds a place of great timbral and poetic refinement, engaging in a balanced and evocative chamber dialogue with the piano.
The repertoire then extends to music of the late twentieth century and to contemporary works, including composers such as Phil Woods, Pedro Iturralde, and Roberto Molinelli, among others.
In this way, the Duo offers a varied and engaging musical journey, capable of combining tradition and modernity, formal elegance and communicative energy, and addressing a broad and diverse audience.
